Two players from the Fraser Valley Jets are behind the bench this week for Team BC at the National Women’s U18 Championship tournament in Newfoundland.
Melanie Jue is head coach and Kelsey Firkus is an assistant coach with Team BC at the week-long competition being played in the cities of Conception Bay South and Mt. Pearl.
Involved in coaching for 14 years, Jue has held roles with the Richmond Ravens Female Minor Hockey Association during the 2011-12 season, Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy (Now RINK Hockey Academy) from 2012-2015, and Lindenwood University (NCAA) from 2015-2018. Jue has also coached on the international stage, representing Team China as an assistant coach during the 2021-22 season.
She scored 25 goals in 35 games with Fraser Valley between 2021 and 2024, winning the SCWHL scoring race and earning a First-Team All-Star award in the 2021-22 season. She has an assist in her only game with the Jets this season.
Firkus is at her second U18 national championship with Team BC, having served as an assistant coach last season. Involved in coaching for three seasons, she has been behind the bench with the Chilliwack Minor Hockey Association U18 A1 team and the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association U15 Development team since the 2022-23 season.
Firkus played 70 games for the Jets between 2015 and 2020, scoring 26 goals and 61 points. She has played two games for Fraser Valley this season scoring twice and earning four points in two games played,
