Week 9: Surge suffer late losses

The Meadow Ridge Moose refused to work overtime on Vancouver Island.
The defending SCWHL and provincial champions won a pair of games late in regulation time in Week 9, scoring the winning goal on the powerplay in the final minute of play in each game against the Island Surge, earning the maximum six points and staying atop the South Coast Women’s Hockey League standings.
The Moose found themselves trailing the North Shore Rebels by three points when they took to the ice at the Panorama Rec Centre on North Saanich Saturday night, and quickly trailed the Surge by a pair of goals after the first period of play.
Eastlynn Bellamy and Micheline Metzner scored to give the Island the lead, and the 2-0 advantage  held up until midway through the third period. Alex Frisk netted a pair of goals for the Moose to tie the game, then defender Kirsten Langston netted a winning goal with 53 seconds left in regulation time.
Jade Zamprogno and Brie Bellerive each had a pair of assists for Meadow Ridge.
Zamprogno netted her first goal of the year on the powerplay with just 55 seconds to go Sunday morning at the Esquimalt Arena, lifting the Moose to a 1-0 win over the Island. Megan Buchanan made 32 saves for the shutout, her third of the season.
North Shore began the week three points back of Meadow Ridge but won twice to take a brief lead in the standings. They thumped the Surrey Wildcats 8-2 on home ice Thursday night at Moody Park Arena in New Westminster.
Elexa Pakozdy with three goals and Ivana Bilic with a pair paced the Rebels. Jasmine Manhas, Simran Sidhu and Karmen Mooney added a goal each for the winners, with Ella Gabriel and Emily Johnston scoring for Surrey.
Saturday evening at Planet Ice – Coquitlam, the Rebels topped the South Fraser TNT 6-2. Bilic, Manhas, Pakozdy, Rebecca Brunswick-Werner, Danica Dahlin and Kirstin Geyer tallied for North Shore, with Megan Jokai and Hayley Voytechek netting one each for the TNT.
The final game of Week 9 was played Saturday night at the Richmond Ice Centre, where Ashley Specht of the Richmond Devils scored her 11th goal of the season in overtime for a 4-3 win over the Fraser Valley Jets,
Specht, Emily Costales and Reaghan Chadwick scored in regulation time for Richmond. The Jets got two goals from Kirsten Martin and one from Jessica Sherwood.
