Week Nine: Win. loss and tie for the Vibe

The Kamloops Vibe have reached the halfway point of their schedule, playing three games in Week Nine and earning three points to extend their lead atop the SCWHL standings.

The Vibe began their weekend with a 4-0 victory over the second place South Fraser TNT at the Langley Sportsplex Friday night, getting goals from Aish Sander, Rochelle Smith, Sarah Botter and Jamie Mackenzie.

Ashley Fisher made 18 saves to earn her third shutout of the season, tying for the league lead with Melinda Choy of the TNT. Choy faced 40 shots in the South Fraser goal, stopping 36.

The Vibe were at the Richmond Ice Centre on Saturday night, playing to a 1-1 draw with the Richmond Devils.

Holly Gill gave Richmond a 1-0 lead after one period of play, and the advantage lasted until five minutes remaining in the game, when Allison Aie scored a powerplay goal for the Vibe to tie the game.

Fisher made 29 saves in the Kamloops goal, while Devils goalie Jenna Ehling stopped 17 of 18 shots.

The tie left the Devils in fourth place with a 4-4-3 (win-loss-tie) record. Richmond is the only team this season to have earned a least a point from the Vibe in two games, having played to a 3-3 tie in Kamloops six days earlier.

The Vibe ran out of gas Sunday afternoon at Planet Ice – Delta, falling 5-1 to the Fraser Valley Jets. Fraser Valley outshot Kamloops 61-20, and got goals from Lindsay DiPietro, Natasha Steblin, Jackie Lang, Shea Gronnemose and Jenna Proulx.

Marjorie Boisvert netted the long goal for Kamloops, which doesn’t play again until the new year but leads the SCWHL with a 9-2-3 mark. The win for the Jets vaulted them into fifth place at 4-3-1.

The Jets and the TNT clashed Saturday night at Planet Ice – Coquitlam where South Fraser emerged with a 5-3 victory. Daniella Matteucci netted a pair of goals for the TNT, with Alisha Choy, Claire Wong and Shea Weighill adding singles. The TNT are in second place at 7-2-2.

DiPietro scored all three goals for the Jets, raising her season total to nine in seven games played.

At Planet ice – Coquitlam Sunday evening, the Devils outlasted the Burnaby Mountain Capitals 7-4, getting four goals and an assist from SCWHL scoring leader Lauren Miller. Rheagan Chadwick tallied twice for Richmond, with Ivana Bilic adding a single.

For Burnaby Mountain, Carolyn Leone scored twice with Alicia Zhan and Kayla White contributing a goal each. The Capitals are in eighth place at 3-7-0.

The Island Surge moved into seventh place with a 4-2 victory over the Cowichan Titans Saturday at the Cowichan Community Centre, improving to 4-8-0 on the season. Deanna Tran paced the Island with a pair of goals, with Jenna Wasylik and Tesla Moisey adding one each. Logan Hamilton of the Surge assisted on three of the four goals.

Maddy Moroz and Madison Vaughn replied for the Titans, .in the league basement at 0-9-0.
