Week 20: Field is set for provincials


The Richmond Devils have clinched the final berth to the six-team Tourism Hope/SCWHL Provincial Championship Tournament March 24-26 in Hope, BC.
The Devils played to a 2-2 tie with the Burnaby Mountain Capitals at the Richmond Ice Centre Saturday evening, assuring themselves of at least a sixth-place finish in the SCWHL standings. Amy Van Eynde netted the game-tying goal with just 50 seconds remaining in regulation time.
Stefanie Costales netted the other Richmond goal, while Megan Jokai scored once and assisted on a tally from Kayla White to lead the Capitals.
The Devils fell 4-2 to the Meadow Ridge Moose Friday night at the Langley Sportsplex.
Emily Bajkov paced the Moose with two goals and an assist. Sydney Kreps and Natalie Richardson also scored for Meadow Ridge, with Reagan Chadwick and Ivana Bilic replying for Richmond.
Although out of the SCWHL playoff picture, Burnaby Mountain earned three of a possible four points from their two games played in Week 20. After Saturday’s tie in Richmond, the Capitals upset the South Fraser TNT 2-1 Sunday night at Planet Ice – Coquitlam.
Jokai and Katie Duchak scored first period goals for Burnaby Mountain, and netminder Breanna Hollingsworth stopped 37 of 38 shots to preserve the lead, conceding only a powerplay tally from South Fraser’s Emiily Grainger midway through the third period.
On Vancouver Island, the North Shore Rebels moved into second place with a pair of shutout victories over the Island Surge.
The Rebels won 5-0 Saturday night at the Panorama Rec Centre, with Kirsten Geyer scoring twice and Avery Hutton, Emily Froese and Nicole Charlston adding singles.
In Sunday’s 1-0 triumph by North Shore at the Esquimalt Arena, Karmen Mooney scored the lone goal of the game with 11 seconds remaining in the third period.
North Shore goalie Cassidy Hendricks made 63 saves over the two games to earn both shutouts.
