Week 4: TNT shares first place

Two wins on Vancouver Island over the Island Surge have lifted the South Fraser TNT into a tie for first place.

The TNT swept a two-game series in Victoria in Week 4, improving to 4-1-1 on the season, tied with the 4-0-1 Meadow Ridge Moose atop the SCWHL standings.

South Fraser got goals from six different players Saturday night at the Panorama Rec Centre to top the Surge 6-2. Goal scorers were Tegan Cochrane, Carlyn Shimizu, Steph Strymecki, Sharon Ross, Michelle Mony and Taralynn Suzuki.

Daris Tendler scored both goals for the Island, both with an assist from Alisha Choy.

Strymecki had a hat trick Sunday in a 5-3 win by the TNT in Esquimalt, pushing her season goal-scoring total to six. Cochrane and Suzuki added a goal each for South Fraser, which outshot the Surge 36-20.

Briana Forberg scored twice for the Surge, with Choy contributing one goal and an assist.

The Moose remained undefeated with a 5-0 victory over the TWU Spartans Friday night at the Langley Sportsplex.

Ashley Long paced the Moose with three goals, and is tied with Strymecki for the SCWHL goal-scoring lead at six. Shea Weighill and Emily Jude netted one goal each, while Megan Buchanan made 23 saves for her first shutout of the season.

The defending provincial champion Fraser Valley Jets split their two games. They began Week 4 with a 2-0 victory over the Richmond Devils Saturday night at the Richmond Ice Centre.

Chelsea Wilson and Shay Gronnemose were the goal scorers for the Jets and Stacey Wilson made 17 saves for the shutout.

The Jets outshot the North Shore Rebels 63-24 in Sunday’s home game at Planet Ice – Delta, but dropped a 2-1 decision.

Justine Johnson of the North Shore assisted on a goal by Andrea Michelle Benac to open the scoring in the second period, then tallied the eventual winner three minutes later.

The Rebels took their 2-0 lead into the third period, and goaltender Cassidy Hendricks faced 30 shots, but the former Saskatchewan Huskies netminder stopped 29 of them to allow North Shore to win for the first time this season.

Kirsten Toth scored the lone Jets goal with 92 seconds remaining.
