Devils, Rebels eliminated in round robin stage

The Richmond Devils were the first team eliminated at the Silver Creek Travel Centre/SCWHL Provincial Championship Tournament, playing to a 1-1 tie with the South Fraser TNT and coming up short on the tiebreaker.

The tie left both teams tied for second place in Pool A, but the TNT advanced to the semifinal round on a better goals for/against ratio. The six-team tournament is being played at the Hope and District Arena.

The Devils, needing a win to advance, took a 1-0 lead in the second period when Kaarina Swinburnson scored early in the second period. The TNT, needing only a draw to avoid elimination, tied the game in the third period when Steph Strymecki scored with 13 minutes remaining.

The TNT will play the Fraser Valley Jets in a semifinal game at 5:15 p.m.

In Pool B, the Meadow Ridge Moose rallied from two goals down to edge the North Shore Rebels 3-2.

The Rebels took a 2-0 lead on a first period goal by Marina Pecchia, and a tally from Ashley Jukich early in the third.

Meadow Ridge rallied in the final 10 minutes, getting goals from Kirsten Langston, Jade Penner and the winner from Madeline Cockrill into an empty net with one second remaining.

The Moose will face-off against the Kamloops Vibe in the second semifinal game at 7:30 p.m. at the Hope and District Arena.
