Day One: Jets advances with two shutout wins

The defending champion Fraser Valley Jets are the first team to qualify for the semifinal round at the Silver Creek Travel/SCWHL Provincial Championship Tournament in Hope.

The Jets won twice on opening day (Friday), as netminder Stacy Wilson collected a pair of shutouts in wins over the Richmond Devils (4-0) and the South Fraser TNT (3-0). The Jets will finish atop Pool A with a perfect 2-0-0 record.

Wilson made 10 saves in the win over the Devils in the morning, with the Jets getting goals from Silvia Traversa, Kelsey Firkus, Krista Ann Prins and Lindsay DiPietro.

In the evening game, the TNT fired 19 shots at Wilson, but the Jets scored the only three goals of the game, with Firkus, DiPietro and Natasha Steblin netting one each.

The Kamloops Vibe split their first two games, but are assured of a top-two finish and a place in the semifinal round Saturday night.

The Vibe began their day with a 6-1 victory over the North Shore Rebels, scoring four times in a seven-minute span late in the second period. Jaclyn Frilund paced Kamloops with two goals and a pair of helpers. Rochelle Smith also tallied twice, with Dani Ayerst and Alyssa Reid adding one each.

In the last game played Friday night, Kamloops fell 4-2 to the Meadow Ridge Moose, with Ayerst and Smith getting the goals. Payge Pena scored twice for Meadow Ridge, including one on a penalty shot. Alex Hendrickson and  Shea Weighill also tallied for the Moose.

Round robin play concludes Saturday morning. In the first game, the Richmond Devils face the South Fraser TNT, with the winner advancing to the semifinal round Saturday night.

The Moose will clash with the North Shore Rebels in the second game of the day, with Meadow Ridge looking for at least a point to clinch first place in the pool.
