Week 15: Moose move to second


A pair of victories on Vancouver Island have moved the Meadow Ridge Moose closer to the top spot in the South Coast Women’s Hockey League.
Two wins over the Island Surge improved Meadow  Ridge’s record to 9-4-3, four points back of the first-place Kamloops Vibe with two games in hand.
The Moose trailed 1-0 after one period Saturday night in Duncan, but rallied for a 3-1 victory. Dayna Leonard netted a powerplay goal to give the Surge a lead. Madeleine Ericsson tied the game early in the second period, then 78 seconds later Sydney Kreps scored the game-winning goal. Kreps added an insurance goal in the final minute of play.
Sunday afternoon in Victoria, the Moose completed the sweep with a 4-3 victory over the Island. Kirsten Langston tallied twice for Meadow Ridge, netting the eventual game-winner with a short-handed goal. Kacey Lepp and Emily Jude added one goal each for the Moose.
Jenna Wasylik with two goals and Mikayla Ogrodniczuk replied for the Surge.
The Richmond Devils also won twice, and now have a nine-point lead in the race for the final playoff position.
Marisa Chau and Ivana Bilic were the goalscorers in a 2-1 victory over the defending provincial champion North Shore Rebels Friday night in New Westminster. Jasmine Manhas netted the lone goal for North Shore.
Saturday night at the Richmond Ice Centre, Holly Gill scored the game-winning goal while the Devils were shorthanded with three minutes to play for a 2-1 Richmond win over the South Fraser TNT. Ashley Specht opened the scoring for the home side, Michele Mony tied the game for the TNT.
The TNT rebounded from Saturday’s loss for a 3-0 win Sunday evening over the Burnaby Mountain Capitals. Taralynn Suzuki scored two goas, She Weighill added one, and Jennifer Price made 39 saves for the shutout.
The North Shore Rebels and Fraser Valley Jets split two games on the weekend. The Jets scored once in each period for a 3-1 victory Saturday night at Queen’s Park Arena, with Natasha Steblin, Chelsea Wilson and Lindsay DiPietro netting the goals.
Elisa Pharaon scored for North Shore, giving her team a 1-0 lead six minutes into the game.
Paved by a hat trick from Elexa Pakozdy, the Rebels won the rematch 5-3 Sunday afternoon at Planet Ice – Delta. Jess Sibley and Simran Sidhu also scored for North Shore, with Wilson, DiPietro and Kelsea Trottier netting the goals for the Jets.
